Ahmedabad is the capital city of Gujarat state from 1960 to 1970, NorthWest India. It is on the Sabarmathi River 275 miles north of Mumbai. Founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmad Shah, the city fell to Akbar in 1573 and enjoyed great prosperity under the Mughal Empire. In 1818 the city came under the British rule. With the opening of cotton mills in the mid-19th century, it became India’s largest inland industrial centre. Mahatma Gandhi lived for a while in Ahmedabad.

Ahmadabad has many outstanding mosques and tombs. It is also sacred to the Jains, who have more than 100 temples there. The Jama Masjid, an ancient Hindu temple converted (15th cent.) to a mosque, is one of the city’s most beautiful buildings.

People here speak Hindi, Gujarati and English. In 2001 the city was struck by a violent earthquake that took many lives.
